EV vs Gas: The True Cost of Ownership

Sticker price is one number. True cost is fuel, insurance, maintenance, tires, and a charger install — here's how the math actually worked out for us, and where the surprises were.

"EVs are too expensive." You've heard it; maybe you've said it. And for many current models — especially if you're considering a new car — it can be true. More options are emerging regularly from traditional manufacturers and new brands, but let's not pretend the sticker shock isn't real.

Here's the thing, though: the vehicle cost, while the largest factor, is only one factor. Insurance can run higher, because this is new technology and repairs are more expensive — the shops need new equipment and training. But with home charging you can see significant savings on fuel, and there's far less maintenance on an EV. In short: it's complicated, and it deserves more thought than the sticker or the monthly payment.

Sticker price vs. true cost

Sticker price is what you pay to a dealership — or through a bank — to make your purchase. True cost is what it takes to own the thing: sticker price, fuel (electricity), insurance, maintenance, repairs, and the other costs you incur to drive a vehicle in your daily life. Comparing two MSRPs tells you almost nothing. Comparing two ownership costs tells you what you'll actually spend.

The fuel math (with real numbers)

Calculating fuel costs is a little more complicated than tracking gas receipts, but the tools exist now. I use my home charger's wifi connection to track the electricity dispensed and its cost, all in one place. Here's what mine says:

  • Home charging has cost about 20% of what fuel cost in the comparable gas vehicle I drove before switching.
  • On a winter road trip — all fast charging, at premium road-trip rates — I still spent only about 75% of what gasoline would have cost me.

That spread is the honest picture: garage electrons are cheap, road-trip electrons are merely competitive. Your numbers will depend on your electricity rates and your driving, and it takes some research to get right — which is exactly why we built a calculator for it (below).

Maintenance: less often, not free

The maintenance story is real, but here's the honest version: visits are less frequent, and when they happen they can cost more. In our experience, the only real expense has been tires — and those are pricey.

The costs nobody puts in the brochure

  • Insurance — for us, the biggest unexpected cost. New technology, expensive repairs, higher premiums. Get a real quote before you buy.
  • Home charger install — budget for it in your planning. Expect to spend at least $1,000.
  • Registration — a little more in some states. With a newer car we expected that.
  • Cord replacements — rare, but they happen.
  • Adapters — prices vary by manufacturer and where you buy.

Incentives: treat them as a bonus

At this point, incentives should really be considered a bonus if you find them. Governments in most jurisdictions have been moving away from them — they're not what they were even a couple of years ago. Where states, localities, and utilities still offer them, they change and they expire. Doing that research before you talk to a dealer is worth it.

The battery argument, since someone will bring it up

The cost claim that drives me nuts: "EV batteries use too many resources and damage the environment, so the savings are fake." Three things.

First — are we really arguing over which material is better to pull out of the ground? If you just want to argue, this guide can't help you.

Second, real-world performance shows significantly longer lifecycles for current battery technology than the skeptics assumed, with a reusable second life for a large majority of the materials after the vehicle is done with them.

Third, battery technology is advancing so quickly that today's extraction-heavy chemistries will fade into the background — and we definitely can't say that about fossil fuels, which do still have important use cases.

Two visits in two years

Here's my anecdote, and it's boring in the best way: in over two years of ownership, I've made exactly two maintenance visits to the dealership — both just to check everything over and rotate the tires. That still feels incredible.

And the part the spreadsheets don't capture: this car is so much fun to drive — at a cost below what I was paying for a comparable gas vehicle that I also genuinely enjoyed. Enjoyed. Past tense. Not like this.
